At the National Shooting Centre, our field archery course features 20 targets set within the woodland environment of Bisley Camp, close to the well-known Short Siberia Range. Archers follow a designated route through the course, stopping at each target to take their shots before moving on to the next. Targets are positioned to take advantage of the natural landscape, creating a varied and engaging shooting experience.
Field archery is a form of archery that takes place along a marked outdoor course, where archers move from target to target through natural terrain. Unlike traditional target archery, which is shot at fixed distances on a flat range, field archery introduces varied distances, angles and shooting positions. This makes it a more immersive and dynamic experience, requiring both accuracy and adaptability.
The course is designed to offer a rewarding experience for individuals, small groups and organised events, combining the precision of archery with the atmosphere of the outdoors at Bisley. Whether you are looking to try archery for the first time or develop your skills in a new environment, field archery provides a unique way to enjoy the sport.
Bisley Field Archery is open to both newcomers and experienced archers.
All members will be issued with a Bisley shooting competency certificate, consistent with other disciplines across the NSC.
Complete beginners will be required to attend a beginner course or a short series of coached lessons before being signed off as competent to shoot unsupervised.
An induction to the course will be required
Archers from other recognised clubs may be accepted where they are formally vouched for by their own club committee. In these cases, the NSC induction will focus on course orientation rather than full reassessment.
Members of Fleet Ibex and Bisley Bowmen will be assumed to be competent by virtue of their existing participation. However, all such members will be required to complete an NSC orientation and awareness

Target archery takes place on a flat range, shooting at circular targets set at known distances. Field archery, in accordance with the National Field Archery Society (NFAS), is shot around woodland or natural terrain, with targets at varying and often unmarked distances. In simple terms, target archery is controlled and consistent, while field archery is more varied and outdoors-based, with the environment adding to the challenge.
